Do you have to have good credit to qualify for Salem Housing Community Development Corporation services?
No. Anyone, with or without good credit, can take advantage of Salem Housing CDC services however, those interested in purchasing or leasing a home must have good credit. For those individuals who need help in improving their credit, Salem Housing will provide credit counseling and you will be expected to work closely with our credit counselors to create a credit plan-of-action for successful home ownership. All workshops and credit counseling are free.

What workshops do you offer and is there a fee? Chase Bank
Salem Housing CDC offers many workshops that help prepare first time homebuyers and current homeowners for successful home ownership. In addition, we provide community building workshops for neighborhood block clubs and organizations. All workshops are FREE and open to the public, and you do not have to be a part of Salem Housing Programs to take advantage of the workshops. Examples of just some of the classes are:

The Home Buyer’s Workshop
Topics include:

  • Developing a budget that will help you buy or keep that “dream” home
  • Discovering how a credit report can “make” or “break” a home purchase.
  • Learning how to choose the right financing option.

The Homeowner’s Workshop
Topics include:

  • Finding ways to finance costly home repairs.
  • Discovering how to choose contractors and manage a construction project.
  • Learning more about credit and money management for repair and remodel projects.

The Home Maintenance Workshop
Topics include:

  • Discovering how to stop annoying faucet leaks.
  • Learning how to effectively winterize a home.
  • Learning how to paint, patch and get great results every time.

Does Salem Housing CDC still provide services for families after they have purchased their homes?
Yes, we provide not only workshops and neighborhood services for existing homeowners, but we also provide access to various grants and loans to assist homeowners with renovation and maintenance projects. What are some of the volunteer opportunities available at Salem Housing?
Our mission could not be carried out without the dedication and commitment of our many volunteers. Every Second Saturday volunteers work beside families in repairing a home that the family will eventually own. This process of volunteers repairing vacant homes stretches the renovation dollars and helps to create safe and affordable housing for the new homeowner. Jobs are assigned related to the volunteer’s skill level while supervision takes place from Salem Housing CDC staff and more experienced volunteers. From spring through fall, Salem Housing is actively involved in beautifying parks, developing urban farms, maintaining vacant lots and improving traffic triangles through the Flint Urban Gardening & Landscape Use Corporation (FUGLUC). What services does Salem Housing CDC provide for neighborhood groups and/or block clubs?
We provide opportunities and services for businesses, residents, churches, neighborhoods block clubs and organizations to problem solve and develop creative ideas and solutions to revitalize their neighborhoods. Many of these services develop the partnerships that are needed to carry out projects sych as accessing small grants to fund the projects. Whether it’s a picnic or social gathering or a workshop on community building, Salem Housing CDC encourages communication as a way to build a stronger neighborhood.

In addition, we provide community meeting rooms and facilities for events as well as the resources, tools and workshops needed to recruit volunteers, develop fundraising events and manage vacant land and properties. We also provide computer and internet access and tools needed for landscaping and home repair projects. Does Salem Housing CDC provide loans for home buyers?
No, we do not provide loans for home buyers, however we do prepare home buyers for down payment assistance through a variety of educational workshops and counseling.

Can Salem Housing provide help with emergency home repairs? 
Maybe, it is never simple but Home Repair workshops provide skills for some home repair problems. In addition, referral lists for contractors and skilled tradesman can link you with reliable workers; tools can be borrowed from the Salem Housing CDC Tool Shed and information on agencies and processes can provide you with more help and Salem Housing can walk you through the process for obtaining low interest loans.  

Can Salem Housing CDC provide help if I’m in a crisis situation with my emergency home repairs such as broken windows, roof leaks or with heating bills?

I am facing foreclosure of my home. Can Salem Housing CDC provide me any help?

I am interested in renting a home in the Metawanenee Hills Neighborhood. How do I get more information? The Metawanenee Neighborhood Development Project has income guidelines for renters.
