Neighborhood and Revitalization

About our Program

This department emphasizes the building of skills within the community both for today and for the future. In 1991, Salem assumed a catalyst role to help make other changes happen. In late 1994, Salem's Community Advisory Committee invited all "stakeholders" - everyone with an interest in the community - to come together to dream, to plan, and to implement those dreams for a strong community. Through this planning process North Flint  21st Century Community was created. Salem Housing initiatives continues to implement those strategies.

Community Building Skills opportunities include:

  • Community Organizing Workshops

  • Organizational Development Workshops

  • Community Strategic Planning

  • Asset Mapping

  • Grant Writing Workshop

Block Club Development & Retention

This department works beside the neighbors to revitalize the neighborhood, building on the strengths of the community to solve problems and develop new ideas. Salem Housing's Community Development Staff assists with block club creation, leadership development, grant writing and management, project development and implementation, and community planning.

Salem Housing is an home for the Take A Step, a conversation tool that is the first of a series of tools that helps citizens and groups in the greater Flint area create a stronger community. It was produced by
The Harwood Institute; a non-profit organization dedicated to improving society. Salem Housing is one of many homes for “Take A Step”. Another part of “Take A Step” is “What’s your story?” , an initiative where people are working together to create new possibilities for Flint and Genesee County. If you have a story to tell or for more information call 810-239-9633.

Both tools are funded by a grant from the C. S. Mott Foundation in hopes of sparking community conversation and action.

Pasadena / M. L. King Avenue Business District Facade Improvement Project

Salem Housing is working with neighbors around the Shiloh Commons housing development to improve this neighborhood. The Business District is an important part of this neighborhood, so Salem Housing looked for funds to assist the Pasadena / M. L. King Avenue Business District that might help to attract neighbors and potential new customers.

Salem Housing received funding from both the Community Foundation of Greater Flint and the Ruth Mott Foundation.
The grant is providing:

Architectural services for  designing the front or signs on any business within the  district;
Architectural services for creating additional streetscape designs;

Funds to implement or seed exterior improvements;

This project requires a 1 to 4 match from businesses. For every $100 that business owners invest, the grant will provide a $400.00 match up to $4,400.00

For more information please call Natasha Thomas at 810-785-5340 ext. 25 or nthomas@salemhousing.org.
