Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to have good credit to quality for Salem Housing services?

No. Credit Counseling is an important part of Salem Housing’s Homeownership Program. Participants do not have to have "good" credit to participate in the program. However, each participant is expected to work closely with Salem Housing credit counselors to create a credit plan of action for successful homeownership.

What classes do you offer and is there a fee?

Salem Housing offers many classes that help prepare first time homebuyers, provides resources for established homeowners and assists concerned citizens with forming and maintaining neighborhood organizations and block clubs. All of our classes are designed to help us fulfill our mission of providing safe, decent, and affordable housing for families and acting as a catalyst for neighborhood revitalization. All of our classes are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. You do not have to be a part of our programs to take advantage of our classes.

Our Pre-Purchase Education classes help families learn about the financial aspect of home ownership. Topics include budgeting, credit repair, selecting a home, and understanding the mortgage process.

The Dare-To-Repair Home Maintenance Classes teach participants basic home repair skills that could save them thousands of dollars in costly labor fees. Topics include: painting, patching, weatherization, plumbing, electrical, windows, doors, landscape design, and neighborhood planning.

Home-buying & Beyond Classes provide existing homeowners with the knowledge, tools, and resources necessary to assess the condition of their home, find and manage reputable contractors and finance needed home repairs and renovations.

Our Community Building Classes help neighborhood residents form, maintain, and fund neighborhood organizations and projects. Topics covered include organizing a meeting, recruiting volunteers, project management, and grant writing.

To register for any of the classes, contact Education & Outreach Coordinator, Natasha Thomas at 810-785-5340 ext. 25 or at nthomas@salemhousing.org

Does Salem Housing still provide services for families after they have purchased their homes?

Yes, Salem Housing provides not only classes and neighborhood services for existing homeowners, but we also provide access to various grants and loans to assist homeowners. To see if you qualify for assistance, contact Homeownership Coordinator, Denise Yarbrough at 810-785-5340 ext 21 or at ljohnston@salemhousing.org

How can I or my group volunteer at Salem Housing?

Yes! The mission of Salem Housing could not be carried out without the dedication and commitment of our many volunteers. If you and/or your group are interested in volunteering with Salem, please contact us at 810-785-5340 ext. 25 or 21.

What services does Salem Housing provide for neighborhood groups and/or block clubs?

In addition to our classes, Salem Housing also provides technical assistance to neighborhood groups. We also provide internet access and information about property ownership. Contact Natasha at 810-785-5340 ext. 25 for more information.

Where are Salem Houses located?

Salem’s target area is bounded by Pasadena Avenue on the North, Saginaw Street on the East, Wood/Begole Street on the South, and Dupont on the West. All of our homes our within these boundaries. However, Salem has some new projects that will open up homeownership in other areas. Also, we provide the same counseling, education classes, and resources to all prospective homebuyers, regardless of area. We will attempt to help homebuyers buy ANY home that they like. However, the final decision is the sellers.
